Grand Central Cinema is one-day film festival celebrating Grand Central in the movies!

Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall is transforming into a movie theater for a day for its first “Grand Central Cinema” event, hosted in partnership with Rooftop Films and the Museum of the Moving Image. Visitors can enjoy film scenes featuring Grand Central throughout the day for free while munching on snacks purchased from Grand Central vendors like Great Northern Food HallShake Shack, and brand-new restaurant Wok Chi. The day will conclude with a sold out, ticketed screening of North by Northwest including Cary Grant’s classic Grand Central getaway scene.

James Sanders, award-winning New York historian and author of Celluloid Skyline: New York and the Movies, will deliver a talk at 12:30pm on Grand Central’s leading role in Hollywood history.

7AM–5:30PM GRAND CENTRAL FILM MONTAGE

Montage will feature classic film scenes shot in Grand Central throughout history.

11:30AM-12:30PM Q & A WITH THE GRAND CENTRAL FILM COORDINATOR

While you watch the Grand Central film montage, Meredith Conti from Metro-North Railroad will be available in the alcove to answer questions about past, present, and future Grand Central film projects!

12:30PM-1:00PM GRAND CENTRAL FILM HISTORY TALK

Architect James Sanders—co-writer with Ric Burns of the acclaimed eight-part PBS series New York: A Documentary Film, and author of the landmark book, Celluloid Skyline—will present a special illustrated talk on Grand Central in the movies. Featuring dozens of rare and unusual images from his collection, the presentation will trace the extraordinary role the Terminal has played in American film history. Followed by Q & A.

6PM–10PM TICKETED SCREENING OF ALFRED HITCHCOCK’S NORTH BY NORTHWEST

Introduced by Museum of the Moving Image Chief Curator David Schwartz, watch North by Northwest featuring Cary Grant’s classic Grand Central getaway scene with Grand Central as your backdrop! Note: EventBrite RSVP does not guarantee entry. Seating is first-come, first-served. Registered attendees are expected to wait on the “Ticketed Line” and check-in before entering. If registered attendees do not show up by 6:30pm, those on the waitlist will be admitted on a first-come, first-served basis to fill available seats.
